Gerry was raised on a general farm in Middlesex County with Holstein cattle, pigs, Clydesdale horses and chickens. His first recollection of the miracles of veterinary medicine was when the family's Scotch Collie "Laddie", had a front leg almost severed by the hay mower.
Dr. Bill Cresswell from Alymer and his new bride, a nurse, stitched "Laddie" back together and put on a cast. Recovery was uneventful.
Gerry attended high school in London (Clarke Road) and in Alymer (East Elgin) and then entered Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, graduating in 1967. During the summers Gerry worked for Oxford and District Cattle breeders in Woodstock breeding cattle, collecting semen and checking cows for pregnancy with staff veterinarians. In the summer preceeding graduation he worked with Dr. Otto Radostits at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon in a large animal farm practice.
Upon graduating, Gerry worked with Dr. Murral Bauman at Eldale Veterinary Hospital in Elmira doing mixed practice. In the spring of 1970 he and a classmate, Dr. Peter Schoppel, who also practiced in Elmira, purchased the large animal portion of Barrie Veterinary Clinic from Dr. Lloyd Fisher and started Allandale Veterinary Clinic, located at 272 Innisfil Street across from the Simcoe District Co-Op. In 1975, the practice moved to its present location at 484 Essa Road.
Gerry is a charter member of the Oro and District Lions Club, past president of the Ontario Association of Bovine Practitioners, has served twice on the Accreditation Committee of the College of Veterinarians. Gerry is an accredited veterinarian with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and is an appointed veterinarian under the Livestock Community Sales Act with OMAFRA.
He and his wife, Ann, live on a farm in Oro Township raising purebred Polled Hereford cattle. They are now "empty nesters" with their youngest, Tyler attending Acadia University in Wolfville Nova Scotia.
